Our goal would be to focus on key gameplay moments that would accurately reflect what Moonfrost is. In order to create a Vertical Slice of the game, small snippets from every aspect of the game were worked on - from characters, environments, UI, visual effects, and music.
Using the camera
As we grew the team in the first few months, we focused primarily on two key areas that would shape our approach to Moonfrost's art; pixel art exploration and camera research, which involved committing to either top-down or isometric views, which could not be changed later. We initially chose to create the game in a top-down view (as is often the case in indie games), but ultimately decided that top-down did not reflect Moonfrost's desire to push the limits of pixel art games. With our talented and experienced team of developers and artists, we wanted to do more. Imagine what a next-gen pixel art game would look like. After much consideration, we decided Moonfrost must be both isometric and orthographic.
A character
Character exploration in Moonfrost is divided into two main categories: Chibis and Avatars. Those who are not familiar with the game production process should know that everything is a journey, and where we start isn't always what we ship, and we expect to go through a variety of iterations during the process. We may well see some more variations along the way as the characters are such an important component. Our early design phase for the Chibis focused on some key aspects.
Chibis
The Chibis are the characters in the game. It took the team a long time to find something that felt right, going through many different concepts and styles. In the initial concepts of the game, the Chibi designs seemed juvenile and unrelatable. We had to consider how detailed the characters were. Since the game is pixel art, we are limited by the amount of detail on screen, but with character customization playing such an important role in the game, it was important to show detail on the characters.
Music and Art: Parallels
In the same way, I approached Concept Art, I approached music in the same way. Concept Art can provide a vision and artistic direction for a project, but I've used music to help us visualize how the project should feel emotionally and tonally. Most of the game projects I've worked on have included music later in the development process. Especially with narrative-driven games, this is such an integral part of the emotional experience for players that it is worthwhile to invest in it early on. We can use Concept Art mood paintings to inspire and get an early sense of where the project is heading, but let that be paired with Music explorations, which can provide a sonic equivalent, which drives home the heartbeat we want players to feel.
Emotional & Vulnerable Tapping
Music is one of the most honest forms of creative expression for me personally. It's something I've done for more than two decades. Back in the early 2000s, when I was just a teenager, I began battering drums in a Hardcore / Metal band. I gained an understanding of raw musical expression and how to channel your heart into sonic experiences through this experience. No matter what genre I compose in, I draw more inspiration from these roots than from any formal music education I have received.
